6 Things You Need To Eat In Prague (And Where To Find Them)

For me, travelling is all about eating. Before I ventured to Prague, I carried out extensive research about what to eat to get the full Czech experience.

I knew what I was in for, and my mouth was watering before I stepped off the plane.

My trip to Prague was just 3 days long, and I tried my very best to scoff as many of the recommended meals as possible. I left with a full belly, a happy heart, and some very clogged arteries.

Now, I’m no Czech food expert, but I know what tastes good. And these dishes taste good. Here are 6 things you should definitely eat in Prague.

1) Roast Duck

Chicken is rarely seen on the menus in traditional restaurants, but there’s certainly a lot of duck. The Czechs seem to looooove their duck.

My roast duck dish was one of my favourites of the trip – and it’s something I hadn’t really tried before. A duck leg, beside a generous heap of sauerkraut, and potato dumplings (gnocchi).

The meat fell off the bone, tasted heavenly alongside the sauerkraut, and only cost 240czk (£8/$10). I can’t recommend it enough.

I ate this dish at a fantastic restaurant, full of locals and tourists alike, called Restaurace Mlejnice – tucked away just outside the main square in the Old Town. Go go goooooo.

2) Goulash

Yep, you knew it was coming. You can’t visit central Europe without a spot o’ goul’.

I’ve had goulash in several countries and it never fails to leave me satisfied. Hearty, meaty, saucy – it’s everything you could want in a meal. And I’ll be honest here, I had it more than once on my 3 day trip.

Slurping on some rich goulash is the perfect way to warm up after a cold afternoon/evening wandering the city’s streets (and pubs…). And just look at all those bready dumplings. You’ll be full for hours.

We ate this at Restaurace Na Klárove, just at the base of Prague castle. A great little find, if I do say so myself.

3) Schnitzel

How could you not? While not traditional, pork or chicken schnitzel is very popular in the Czech Republic – as well as much of the rest of Europe. Czech schnitzel is often eaten alongside some tasty potato salad.

You’ll be able to find it in loads of different restaurants, but we went to our favourite Restaurace Mlejnice (where I had the duck, as mentioned earlier).

4) Svickova

I was so excited to try this Czech dish that is traditionally made for weddings and Sunday dinners. It’s a piece of beef smothered in a creamy, vegetable sauce, with chunky dumplings on the side. It did not disappoint.

The sauce was rich and delicious, and it tasted great with the meat and cranberries. I ate this for lunch at the very central Restaurace U Provaznice, and it cost just 218 czk (£7/$9). A steal.

5) Wiener Sausages

You know where you are with a sausage.

It would be rude not to eat a nice chunky sausage when visiting Europe. We just love them over here – and the Czechs are no different.

You’ll find “Czech” sausages everywhere you go, including at ice hockey games – which was where we had the most deliciously spicy and smoky klobása sausage. You’ve got to give it a try.

And for dessert…

6) Trdelnik

OK, don’t bite my head off. I know these aren’t Czech – they’re actually an import from Hungary. But you can’t visit Prague without trying one.

These sweet, nutty, cinnamon-y tubes of joy are everywhere in the centre of Prague. The entire Old Town is practically enveloped by their appealing doughy aroma.

You can fill your trdelnik with all sorts; cream, fruit, chocolate, ice cream. Or why not all four?! They’re just delicious. A must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

And no, I don’t know how to pronounce it.

What else should go on the list?

So there you go – my top 6 things to eat in Prague. Of course, there’ll be loads of other dishes and delicacies I haven’t tried, can’t recommend, or have never even heard of. I was only there for 3 days!

Is there anything else you’ve tried in Prague that you just loved? Let me know in the comments!
